A widespread, if shy and retiring, breeding resident of scrub, orchards and thick hedgerows.

1982

Maximum aggregation from WAS counts, 9 Drefach Felindre, 24 January.

1984

6, Llandybie, 28 October.

1985

8, Dryslwyn, 15 January. Good ash keys crop, party of 5+ around all late year, Gwenffrwd Reserve.

1986

Flocks of 12, Betws, 12th; c30 Black Scar, 25 January.

1992

Although widely recorded, the only noteworthy record was of a group of 26 in Pembrey Forest on 12th December.

1993

The only records received were of a parties of 10 in Pembrey Forest on 24th April and 12 at Pendine Burrows on 8th September.

1994

Two pairs bred at Witchett Pool fledging 7 young. A party of 12 was observed near Cynghordy Viaduct on 18th December.

1995

The largest gathering was that of 12 at Cynghordy on 13th January.

1996

Six pairs bred around the Witchett Pool.

1999

A group of 10 was seen at Cynghordy on 12th December with 9 at Salem on 13th.

2001

A nutfeeder attracted 1 at Blaenau on 9th June. During the second winter period 8 fed off thistles at Ffosddu on 7th December.

2002

Only three reports: 8 at Pwllau, Taliaris on 7th December and 3 at Usk Reservoir on 15th. A minimum of 10 pairs bred at Penclacwydd.

2003

On 2nd January c30 at Mynydd Tre-beddau. 2 males at Manordeilo on 18th and 25th January. 2, Bancyffordd, 12th March. 6 at Rhydcymerau on 28th August and c13 at the Sifigwm Plantation, Brechfa Forest on 21st November.

2005

Two breeding territories by the Usk Reservoir. A further 7 pairs located 4 sites. Fifteen were found together at Fwng 1saf December 26th.

2006

Compared with parts of lowland England this species is quite numerous in the county.

2007

Despite declining numbers elsewhere this species remains a regular sight within the county. A flock of up to 15 Ffordd y Wagen December 15th is though quite exceptional.
