SN83-29- Description and habitatsA large, deep reservoir surrounded by mixed-age coniferous woodland including areas of clear-fell. There are also areas of deciduous and mixed woodland, farmland and moorland. DirectionsThe Usk reservoir is most easily accessed from the A40 Llandovery to Brecon road at Trecastle, from where it is signposted. It is also possible to reach the reservoir from the A4069, south of Llandovery by way of Llangadog, Pont-ar-llechau and Twynllanan. The border between Carmarthenshire and Powys runs across the centre of the reservoir. If you wish to birdwatch in Carmarthenshire, head for the north shore of the reservoir which, in any case offers the best birding. Park at the south end of the dam and walk across the dam, from which there are good views of the reservoir and the upper Usk valley, to reach the road which runs part-way round the north shore. Alternatively, drive to the farm below the dam and take the road to the north side (there is an “Usk Reservoir” sign at the road junction). There is parking at several places along the north-shore road and at the road end. The forest tracks are closed to vehicles. Facilities for visitorsPicnic sites only. Disabled people may be able to bird from a vehicle. Tips for birding the siteThe reservoir can be scanned from the roadside and from the dam. In winter, it holds a variety of ducks and rarer grebes sometimes occur. From the road on the north shore, there are several broad tracks which allow access to the forestry plantation and a path which continues along the north shore. Watch for raptors.
