You may have missed –

Saturday, 11 June 2011 – Tally Lake

12 members met in the car park at Tally Lake, where we were greeted to great views of two male redstarts.  We walked through the churchyard and alongside the top lake, where there were lots of swallows and sand martins over the lake.  On our way to the wood there were blackcap, goldfinch and willow warbler.  The wood to the hide on the bottom lake was quiet but on the lake were mute swans with six cygnets, grey heron and tufted duck.  Our return journey was a lot quicker as the heavens opened and thunder was heard in the distance.  We had an early lunch whilst waiting for the rain to recede.  After lunch we climbed the hill behind the car park and were rewarded by spotted flycatchers, chiff chaff, coal tit, siskin mistle thrush, tree pipits and reed bunting.  On nearing the top the weather changed dramatically for the worse with heavy rain and hail stones.  We quickly took cover in the woods and waited for the storm to pass over.

Here is Wendell looking very soggy!!

(Thanks to Barbara Edenborough for the photograph)

As we made or way back to the cars we had a great view of tree creepers and a wonderful sight on a wood warbler feeding young.  In all 44 species were recorded.

Saturday, 9 July 2011 – Pembrey CP

Our usual butterfly and dragonfly day out proved to be another success, with 10 species of butterfly recorded including: skippers (large and small), comma, ringlet, marbled white, dark green fritillary, small pearl boarded fritillary, speckled wood and meadow brown.  Emperor and black tailed skimmer dragonflies were also sighted.

Monday, 15 August 2011 – Tern Watch, Burry Port

19 members braved the cold and blustery evening at Burry Port on our annual tern watch.  There were approximately 50 sandwich terns (although the evening before there were about 200), three common terns, 51 turnstone, dunlin, knot, hundreds of oystercatchers, gulls (mediterranean, common, herring, black headed, lesser and greater black backs), peregrine, buzzard and sparrowhawk – 23 species were recorded.

Thank you to Wendell for his time and effort in organising events, it is greatly appreciated.
