WOS National conference 2010 PDF Print E-mail

The next national WOS conference, in association with RSPB Cymru and BTO Wales, will be held on Saturday 6 November 2010 in Carno Community Centre, near Caersws, Powys. It's the only annual opportunity for Wales' birdwatchers to gather, share news, meet new people, learn about our country's avifauna - and don't forget the opportunities to see and buy wildlife art, books and multimedia.

The theme is Wetlands Birds in Wales, preceded by the Annual General Meeting. Download the booking form and send it with your payment by 28 October to guarantee your place (but we suggest you do it now, just in case your forget!)

Request for birds in an urban environment PDF Print E-mail

Hi,

My name is Sally Snow and I work for Aden Productions, a small independent television company based in Cardiff. We specialize in producing wildlife documentaries and are currently producing a series on birds for the BBC. The series which is presented by Iolo Williams is currently in the final stages of production. However we are in need of some more footage of birds in an urban environment and consequently are on the look out for any bird behaviour (be it nesting, gathering or feeding…etc) within an urban or man-made setting.

I was hoping the members of the forum might be able to help me in my search for urban birds-I’m looking for something such as a blue tit nesting in a post box, or a blackbird rearing chicks in an old tractor...etc. I realise it is still early for nesting birds, but if anybody had any suggestions we’d love to hear from them. We can only film in the next few weeks so the time limit is pretty tight. If anybody had any ideas please could they drop my colleague Emma Ford an email at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Thank you kindly,

Sally

Breeding Birds in Carmarthenshire PDF Print E-mail

Dear All,

Thank you for your efforts in the Atlas 2007-11 in Carmarthenshire. We are getting there-whereever there is and records have continued to come in inspite of the inclement winter. We are also well on the way to a surprisingly comprehensive county atlas. And this is all down to your efforts. Thank you!

However.... Attached is a excel spreadsheet with the 10km squares along the top and 60 of the county's most widespread breeding species down the side. Green means that breeding has been proved for that species in that square, yellow means that the highest level of breeding status observed is possible or probable and white means that there is no level of breeding recorded for that species in that square.

So:

  1. The aim is to turn as much of the white and yellow into green. Can you help in your 10km square? Or any other?
  2. And even if there is a green dot for that species in your 10km square, remember the county atlas needs breeding records at tetrad level.
  3. There is a bottle of wine for the first person to get a confirmed breeding record for Grasshopper Warbler in the county!
  4. If you want the codes for breeding behaviour, go to the "Taking Part" of the atlas webpage and then click on "Breeding Evidence". Or email me and I can send a card

Thank you in anticipation and lets hope for some good weather this spring!

John
